Feeling overwhelmed is sometimes a matter of perception – if you think you have too much to do, your limbic system takes over and you can’t think creatively about alternatives.

Overscheduling is a common form of resistance because it seems so virtuous. “I want to write, I really do, but I can’t because I have all these other (less satisfying and less scary) things to do.” Overcommitting yourself is one way to keep yourself safe from the risk of noticing how you feel and what you think and trying to write about that.

Sleep … the last frontier.  These are the voyages of “Gee do I have to?” and “I can live off of just 4 hours” craziness.  The mission is to totally crash my life by going against every bit of research about what meaningful sleep actually is.

Ok ok … so I’m being a little sarcastic.  But this is how I often have approached sleep in my life … something annoying … a nuisance … and something I would fight against and try to live with as little as I could.  But, I’ve started to act more like a grown up of late, and put into practice what research tells me I should embrace about sleep.
